Nice is the main city of the French Riviera, on the Mediterranean, with the Promenade des Anglais, a colourful old town and the hills of the Alpes-Maritimes right behind the coast. The climate is Mediterranean: summers (June to August) are hot, dry and sunny, autumn is warm with some heavy rain, winters (December to February) are mild, and spring is bright. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for racing, with warm days and cooler mornings. Hills behind the city make the bike courses demanding. Nice Côte d'Azur is one of France's busiest airports, and trains run along the coast.
